During the latest 2008 Music Festival at Wallenstein Castle in Prague, presented by Music Bridges International, pianist Hugh Sung demonstrated the amazing expressive capabilities of the Pianoteq virtual piano software. Pianoteq is developed by Modartt in France. The controller keyboard was provided by Bohemia Pianos. Hugh Sung performed the Chopin Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23.

  • I made a comment about simulating sound propagation (on the other related YT video) by placing the sound source so it reflect similar to how a piano lets sounds "escape" it's structure... It might even through off those that think they can tell the difference (in a true blind A/B test) ... If you DO take up my suggestion; remember you heard it first HERE! (*smiles*)

  • What an interesting idea! I'd love to give this a try someday - thanks!

  • I'm curious about the Bose L1 cylindrical speaker system - anyone out there familiar with how well it would work with a digital instrument as expressive as Pianoteq? It seems to be getting a lot of rave reviews from popular musicians...

  • He used a digital baby Grand piano, but just as controller, since the piano sound was emulated by Pianoteq.

  • Good observation! The controller was a digital keyboard made by Bohemia, connected via MIDI into my M-Audio Fast Track pro digital audio/MIDI USB interface to my Sager 9262 laptop running Pianoteq, outputting the audio through some small Yamaha speakers. Portable speaker technology still has a long way to go, in my opinion (if anyone knows of a great portable speaker solution please let me know!)

  • Those Bose sound systems are amazing. It makes you think how does such small speakers sound so big? I think it's a good investment if you do get one. I'm a guitarist but I don't own an amp, I use computer plug-ins with my computer. so I'm thinking about getting one of those Bose L1 system for my room. It might be more than enough for my room but I can always play it low volume and if I need I can use for shows too. Nice piano playing btw. or should I say pianoteq playing? lol :)

  • (great portable speaker solution)

Unfortunately -- sound reinforcement is in as much an art (more so perhaps) that the many variations that exist in the manufacturing of (real) pianos (variations in string, hammer, sound board, etc.). That said, ultimately it is up to you to review (listen) and judge for yourself before purchase. Too small and it probably won't have expressive low frequencies... to large and it might have directivity issues at high frequencies (and is not as portable anymore).
