PAULETTE GODDARD: "I THEENK I KEEL YOU!"

[Please read] In character, she deserves a spanking----and she gets it. Can this still be a video of goodwill and admiration? Yes. The film is NORTH WEST MOUNTED POLICE (1940). It is a romantic adventure directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Paulette plays the saucy half-breed squaw "Louvette Corbeau." She's in love—to the point of overprotective folly—with equally infatuated Mountie "Ronnie Logan" (Robert Preston). This video chronicles the lovers' highs and lows. More importantly, it keeps the focus on Paulette Goddard, one of the most photogenic actresses—in any costume—of her time. Man-of-few-words Gary Cooper, heavenly Madeleine Carroll, and stalwart Preston Foster also contribute to NWMP, DeMille's first Technicolor film.

NWMP's predominantly Romantic dialogue is typical for a DeMille film: the director demanded screenplays that featured colorful spoken expression (and "business") as well as inspired sentiment; what you hear is the way he thought his characters OUGHT to speak in his dramatic world. This is an artistic attempt to reflect an exalted sense of life. Frequent DeMille screenwriter-collaborator Jesse Lasky Jr. once again delivers the goods, but never seems able to avoid the verbosity that tends to weigh down DeMille's films with talkiness. In NWMP, by accident or design, Paulette's "half-breed slang" is hilarious; yet her character is very much in earnest. Perhaps NWMP's greatest asset is its outstanding Technicolor cinematography—truly a feast for the eyes. For the first time onscreen, audiences could admire Paulette's pale, icy blue eyes.

At the Playboy Expo in 1999, Hugh M. Hefner—founder of Playboy—reminisced about some of his favorite things in life. One of them was actress "Alice Faye's smile." I feel equally inspired by Paulette Goddard's—I consider hers the most dazzling smile in Hollywood history. Equivalent in impact to an amusement-park thrill ride.

they used to have real actors/actresses back in the old days. Much better everything including storyline/scripts (except when they pushed for their wars of aggression/ propaganda BS), American ppl had more control over holeywood but then in the 50's they started to take a (planned) nose dive into hell and today I would not even wipe my toilet brush on holeywood! producers/directors/actors and actresses included.
