A collection of pictures in video format and historic film clips by mikeminnesota showing Doolittle's mission to attack Tokyo at the beginning of the Pacific war after the Japanese attack to Pearl Harbor. MIlitary part of the raid included Low, Halsey, Duncan, Marc Mitscher of Hornet CV-8. Jimmy Doolittle led 16 B-25 Mitchell Bombers off the deck of the aircraft carrier Hornet (CV-8). The Doolittle Raid, April 18, 1942, was the first air raid by the United States to strike the Japanese home island during World War II. The mission was notable since it was the only time in U.S. Military history that United States Army Air Forces bombers (16 modified B-25B bombers) were launched from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier on a combat mission. The raid demonstrated that the Japanese home islands were vulnerable to Allied air attack, and it provided an expedient means for U.S. retaliation for Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. For an interview of John Kemp, who worked with the launch officer during the raid and all durning the war go to "Don Kemp launches Doolittle airplane raid interview" http://youtu.be/yWh29b4uwRQ

  • Nice video. Very informing. Just one thing wrong though. It's the MEDAL of HONOR, the word congressional is not in it's description.

  • @doddi93 referred to yes, but incorrectly.

  • Very informative. Thx for making & sharing this.

  • Thank you. Such brave men most now days couldnt imagine.

  • Great Video Footage! Congrats.

  • Good video. The Doolittle raid was of greater significance than just being the first on Japan, it also helped drive a wedge between Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany as Japan wanted captured US aircrew executed whereas the Germans thought this could affect the morale of Luftwaffe pilots incase the Allies retaliated in kind. The Japanese did execute 3 of the air crew on this superbly executed raid.

A personal view: - the use of B25s from a carrier - typically brilliant American improvisation.

  • I know a guy in Mpls that put on the gas tanks. Great video.

    Tom

  • THANK U SOO MUCH MIKE! RIP JIMMY, SALUTE

  • read in military magazine some of the raiders returned to combat in Europe flying

B-25s and lost their lives. Many of the other fliers in their groups, though honored with their presence, felt they had done their service bombing Japan and didn't need to be in combat any longer.
