Video #16 of a day by day record of my little Teddy Bear hamster couple's 11 adorable children;
This is their 1st and only litter. Watching the babies grow up and helping their mom take care of them was huge fun, I'm glad I could be a part of it! :D The babies were born on March 9th, 2009.
Read on for my rant of background information!
About 3 months after getting the dad, Frankie from Atlas Pets I got my little Fiona from another pet store across town. (Its a big town.) After hours of research I fell in love with baby hamsters and was determined to let my hamsters have a litter of their own. I decided to get 2 teddy bears as DIFFERENT as possible so the babies wouldn't turn out demented or deformed from inbreeding... :/ I meant to get a big female that could have a lot of babies (I know, choosing a hamster for all the wrong reasons XD) but I fell in love with Fiona. She is the runt of her litter but has the biggest heart in the world. Her siblings were the size of ordinary teddy bears. (or panda bears as they are know today)
Around 10 days after she got preggers I put Fiona in a baby proof cage. (Old glass aquarium with a lid, low water bottle, extra soft all natural cotton bedding and no hamster wheel-to Fiona's dismay.) Fed her high-protein foods-boiled eggs whites, cheese, cooked chicken, and homemade treats made from peanut butter,carrots, and oatmeal. Along with her normal diet of dog chow mixed with store bought hamster food and various seeds, dried fruit. Plus fresh fruits and veggies on the side every day.
When Fiona was pregnant she was wider than she was long, it was hysterical. So I thought she must be having 6 or 7 babies instead of 3 or 4 like I thought such a tiny, young hamster would normally have. My jaw dropped when I first saw her with this massive pile of babies underneath her! Fiona did a great job as a mom, she didn't eat any of her babies. Even though she is the most hyper hamster I have ever seen she was very trusting and completely okay with me handling her babies. (I made sure my hands were clean and warm whenever I did.) 10 of the 11 babies survived and thrived, only the runt of the litter died. His name was Sammy, RIP Sammy. D:
I kept 2 of the baby hamsters and the others were adopted by some of my friends and cousins. A few have died of old age but some of them are still alive. All 10 turned out to be fantastic, gentle hamsters with big personality, they don't bite at all, but they're kind of silly. I think handling them a lot when they were young really helped them to get used to people. They were all so comfortable that even little kids could hold them.
Teddy Bear hamsters are a variation of syrian hamsters. The main difference is that they have longer fur than ordinary syrians... this is especially true with the males! They tend to get a "skirt" of long fur on their backsides, many owners simply trim the long fur down. All variations of syrian hamsters generally have 6-8 babies in their 1st litter and have larger follow up litters. Females can get pregnant every 4-5 days. Most hamsters are pregnant for 16 days.
My apologies for the sub-par camera quality! I'd love to talk in the videos, unfortunately the sound my camera records is played back as gibberish. :c
