Wills developed the melody for the tune "San Antonio Rose" from the tune "Spanish Two Step" by playing the bridge in that tune in reverse. It was named by Art Sutherland (The Colonel). They recorded it in 1939 and it went gold. It became New San Antonio Rose when the band members added lyrics. They set the country music world on its ear when they appeared on the Grand Ole Opry in December, 1944 with Drum and Trumpet. The crowd loved it and has never stopped.
