The Witches
In 1590, the reigning monarch, King James the VI of Scotland, was in danger of being toppled from his throne by the blight of witchcraft. In North Berwick, three fishwives, Margaret, Ina and Sandra, have good reason to believe that they might be targeted in the King's witchhunt and set about devising a plan to save themselves from the fearful witch-dooking apparatus.
Director and Animator Elizabeth Hobbs has developed a special technique using watercolour that is filmed directly under the rostrum camera, a method that developed from her experience of making Artist's Books using printmaking. Her films and books have a strong narrative and often represent overlooked historical moments with a humorous slant. Written by filmmaker, Morag McKinnon, The Witches was funded by Cineworks in August 2001 and Produced by Katja Anderson at Red Kite Productions.
