France, BEZIERS French Vacation Village: Cathare / Catholic 13th C Albigensian Crusade Saint Nazaire's Cathedral & the St Madeleine Church Massacres by

Cathares were a popular 13 C neo-Christian sect in the Langdoc-Rousillon region of Southern France. Pope Innocent III called for a crusade which wiped out them and thousands of Catholics to boot: eg. initially, Beziers got in the way and lost almost all its 20,000 citizens. Major massacres took place in the Madeleine Church and St. Nazaire's Cathedral, both of which were burned, along with the rest of Beziers. This event furnished history with an infamous quote: "Kill them all-- God will know his own."
Note the infant falling on the steps in the painting in Saint Nazaire's --- symbol of this little known tragic holocaust of a barbaric crusade that still remains a source of eternal shame to the Catholic Church and France in general.
