The enclosed web site states that an early version of the accordion started in China around 3000B.C. and it was called the Cheng. The cheng used the free vibrating reed principle, which is the basis of the accordion's sound production. Cyrillus Damian, a Viennese instrument maker was the first to patent the instrument using the accordion name in 1829.
German instrument maker, Christian Friedrich Buschmann created the first true accordion in 1822. His version was named The hand-aeoline and contained expanding bellows fixed onto a small portable keyboard, with free vibrating reeds. In 1828 he left Berlin and toured with it.
