Tai Chi is as much of a martial art as any "internal" style/art. If you've practiced it for 18 years, I find it strange your teacher didn't take you up to combat applications yet. It's been enough time to already become a formidable Tai Chi fighter, not only begin wondering if it can be used for combat.
Hey Greg - do you mean me as you replied to my comment? I've been practising Tai Chi and various Martial Arts since 1991. TC is just what it is - looks great, works on mind and body. The comment about learning moves slowly then quicker is learning by intellect not by reflex, so wouldn't work IMHB. Greg u need Tai Chi to deal with your aggression - why r us so angry buddy?
evening Thomo...yeah i was referring to your post, but I'm not angry, more amused! tai chi actually is a martial art. I'm not stating an opinion, simply a fact. If you have been learning for 18 years and you are still unaware of this (or that it works on developing 'chi' as well as mind and body), perhaps you need to seek a different teacher. like i asked...where are YOUR videos...buddy? PS
Not unaware, just unconvinced. Yep I went to a demo12 yrs ago but the guy was actually doing Wing Chun - although he called it TC. I've visited other styles just to talk to the teachers most ppl say TC is what u want it to be - ok. This video is lovely but the argument is about TC as a fighting art. TC is too slow IMHO and when it's fast it is Kung Fu! So do Kung Fu. Every MA includes Chi! Which form helps when you are taken to the floor/vs multiple attackers? Let's hope no one finds out!
Thomo1305... What do you mean Taijiquan is too slow? And when it's fast it's Kung Fu? What are you talking about? Taiji is only done slow when doing form to learn energy flow and body mechanics, when done as a martial art it's done with explosive short energy... It's still taijiquan when done fast, it doesn't just change into another art because you speed it up. I think you may need to do a bit of research. Yang Luchan wasn't known as Yang the Invincible for nothing, taijiquan is a martial art.
Please, think of the slow movements as programming your subconscious to react when something consciously happens to you. Learn it slow, then do it fast. You'll see it's application as a martial art.
why dont you lot try and imgine that there was an oponent in front of him and what the actions that he does now do then youll prob see why they call it a martial art

before shooting your mouth off, learn a little about the subject...
