Fall Prairie Walk -- October 2011
In Ann Arbor, fall is often synonymous with apple cider and U-M football games. But what other sweet and thrilling things flourish around here this time of year? To explore, we took a walk through one of the area's most famous woodlands, the Nichols Arboretum. Our guide led us into the Alex Dow Prairie, where we looked closely at what's vanishing and what's thriving, from the big bluestem and late-summer asters to the meadow voles and short-tailed shrews. We followed our time in the prairie with some writerly exploration of our own in the Reader's Center while we sipped - what else? - some fresh-pressed apple cider and noshed a pumpkin donut or two.
