The longest-running futurity in Quarter Horse racing provided a thriller Saturday night at Remington Park as the Grade 3, $355,000 Oklahoma Futurity went to Del Shake.
Owned by Delfino Lozano, IV of Zapata, Texas and trained by Alberico Salinas, Del Shake was one of nine 2-year-old fillies in the futurity, facing off against just one male in the field of 10. Ridden by Raul Ramirez, Jr., Del Shake was successful from the first post position after a quick start.
She broke good, she was in front after the first 50 yards and just kept on going,
Ramirez said. This filly is a racehorse and she can run and break from any hole. Today she broke better than in her trial.
Salinas was confident in his charge and had concern for just one rival, who had made a rally against his filly on trials night two weeks ago.
I thought if she broke well wed win the race. I wasnt worried about any others in the race except the Eddie Willis horse Illegal Fireworks, Salinas noted. She ran in the same trial as mine and ran second to us. That was the only one I was afraid of tonight.
Illegal Fireworks overcame a slow start to run third. The top qualifier for the Oklahoma Futurity, Teller Shes An Angel, battled for the front but could not hold off the winner, running second by a neck.
Bred in Texas by her owner Lozano, Del Shake handled the futuritys 300 yards in :15.522 over a fast track.
Del Shake, a filly by Contend from the Royal Shake Em mare Shake Em Faster, won her second race in as many starts and earned the first-place check of $113,600 for her effort. After two winning races at Remington Park, her lifetime bankroll stands at $119,384.
