Neither... American Revolution, during the 18th Century, War was more about respect and tradition, and if you see someone holding a drum instead of a Musket, you obviously don't want to shoot him so to counter that they switched the colors around, in this case the colors for the Continental Army of the Middle Colonies were overall blue and red trimmings yet they switched it around for the musicians and it so happened to look British

The European custom in the 18th century was to signify a musician's status as a signaler and non combatant by reversing the colors of the coat of the regiment to which they were assigned. Hence the reason why the coats are red with blue facings. Also, the color of the facings in the American army signified which part of the colonies soldiers were from.
