Bolivian bishops have expressed deep concern about the attacks made by the country's president Evo Morales against Cardinal Julio Terrazas, Cardinal Archbishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.President Morales has accused Cardinal Terrazas of participating in the draft of the new constitution voted upon by Bolivia on Sunday January 25th, which passed with about 59% of the vote in favor compared to about 41% against. The same Cardinal and bishops have criticized some important aspects of the constitution.In a statement released January 15, as reported by the news agency Zenit, the Bolivian Episcopal Conference has expressed "bewilderment and concern over the persistent attacks and criticism that the highest authority of the country is carrying out against Cardinal Julio Terrazas."The Episcopal Conference "is concerned that while the Catholic Church contributes with calm, objective and respectful analysis to an electoral climate that is peaceful, critical and responsible, some government officials resort to insult and criticism.""Faced with these attacks, we ask not to use the Church or their authorities as a front for pre-electoral political propaganda."
