One of two videos featuring all of the special stages for the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast: Flickie's Island. This covers the first four special stages. The next video (see the video response) contains the remaining three.

Special Stage 1: 0:17
Special Stage 2: 1:58
Special Stage 3: 4:04
Special Stage 4: 5:58

For those who aren't in the know, this game was released on the Genesis/Mega Drive, Saturn and PC. And while the Saturn and PC versions featured upgraded graphics from the Genesis/Mega Drive original, each had completely different special stages that were unique to that version.

The Saturn was the only one to feature a true 3D special stage, and considered by many to be the best out of all of them (the special stages, the game itself is to each their own). Similar in style to those found in Sonic 2, it's gotten a 3D face lift with new platforms, accelerators, tunnels and curves.

I read that while Traveler's Tales was responsible for producing the majority of the game, the Saturn's special stages were done by Sega of Japan. So that kicking my interest, I decided to give this game a go again, and now that my computer's good enough for Saturn emulation (I'm using SSF), decided to tackle all seven of them and put it on YouTube, since it appears no one's done it yet.

Strangely, I remember these being a lot harder for some reason. I could barely get past the third one back then, and now I didn't lose until the final. I gotta admit, though, I used save states before each stage so I could practice and learn the pattern of the stages. That way when it was time to record I wasn't missing rings and instead running into bombs left and right.

As mentioned earlier, I'm using SSF for the emulation, and playing off the original Saturn disc.

Music by the awesome Richard Jacques when he was an in-house composer at Sega of Europe. Good times.

  • I'm looking at this game now in the year 2010 and I think it looks cool as hell for a special stage. Imagine what we thought of this when we were kids!

  • @meirus Actually that's one of the main reasons I went back and popped it back in. :)

  • are the special stages the same on the genesis version? ive only played it about 4-5 times and i havnt been to any special stages

  • @knoxianpanda If they were I'd be DAMN impressed. Some of the videos on the right show off the Genesis version.

  • Thumbs up if you think that it should have been the Saturn version who got on Sonic Mega Collection. The music is just......better!

  • I'd like to see Sonic 3-D Blast (Saturn version) on the consoles.

  • @Monstoday

It was a competitor however it was a flop outside of Japan due to flimsy marketing and a lack of games compared to the N64 and PS1.

  • @Monstoday Actually it WAS a competitor back then, but Saturn barely survived against PS1 and N64

  • I searched Youtube for Saturn videos out of curiosity as I've never owned or played one. Seems like the special stages here are like the ones from Sonic 2 but improved graphics and I like the music. I think that the Saturn should have been a competitor back in the PSX vs N64 days.

  • @TailsSena Welcome ;)

  • @TailsSena I would know. ;P

It's the game's title screen, but edited. Now go forth, into the abyss of the internet to find that which you seek! And you might want to grab a gallon of milk while you're at it.

  • @knoxianpanda I wish I had a Saturn...

btw, do you know waht song he used for the into? I neeeeeed it!!

  • @TailsSena I know that now, I own a genesis and a saturn. They're both amazing though XP
