I think a movie that promotes good standing up against evil is better by far for children than most of the so called family movies/shows these days. It is a concept that needs to be taught... It is not violence without a purpose. There would be less bullies in our schools if we all taught our chidren to stand between evil and those they seek to hurt.

@zzyzx0788 It's extremely condescending to suggest that concepts like severed limbs or murder are inappropriate for children. If you compare the SW films to similar period kids' films like Indiana Jones (especially Temple of Doom), Hocus Pocus, Gremlins, Labyrinth, Transformers: The Movie, every single one of them is arguably darker than Star Wars, yet are amongst the most beloved kids movies. SW is a series aimed at kids, that happened to appeal to adults, not vice versa.

Of course the Star Wars movies were made for kids, hence the obvious audience surrogate kid character of Luke, the toy merchandise, Ewoks etc. Mature themes like murder are not exclusive to adult fiction. The Cartoon Network Clone Wars series is arguably darker than any of the SW movies. It's less offensive to upscale kids movies than dumbing down adult ones by introducing child-focussed characters like Jar-Jar, Ewoks, R2 etc.
