There is a lot of work that goes into performing live. People were often asked to do a curtesy performance for a TV show in which they probably did not have the time to spend hours and hours setting up everything, shifting in backing singers etc etc just for one song. In most cases, they were likely to jet off somwhere else right after and don't have time to pack everything up. This is why lip syncing is common for TV shows. People know ABBA are amazing live singers anyway, as proven here.

@HPfan71 There are good reasons why the Dick Cavett show recordings sound so good: 1) it is recorded live but in a studio environment so they might have done several takes 2) all the musicians are the ones also recording with them in the studio 3) to achieve the vocal textures there are at least 3 additional backing vocalists 4) they were all pretty good musicians to begin with.

During the time ABBA was a group it was common for all groups to lip sync on TV appearances.  I'm sure it was money and probably easier not to have to set up a full setup as here.

One great thing is at least they sang live in concert where now you rarely have anyone actually sing live without autotune these days.

This is a great live performance. They were top notch musicians and singers.

Agnetha is really sexy as always here. Bite that lip, babeeeee.

@HPfan71 Because they had to have about 15 musicians to do a live performance. They had lots of tracks on their recordings. This band had a goal of making the best recordings they could and they spent lots of time in the studio, thus did not have the time to do a lot of live stuff. So they did a lot of TV from backing tracks because that is what they had time to do. Remember they all had small children as well so time was always in short supply.
