I'm seeing them in a few days and I just know that I will burst into tears when the song starts, it's so heartbreaking and one of my greatest fears ever.

@dfjnjfn Brilliant analysis, you are absolutely correct. Until i read your post, i had always listened to this song as just something beautiful, even after years and years of listening to Death Cab, i had not broken through the sheer beauty of this song to even understand the lyrics, but what you said makes absolute sense. And its ironic that you say you can identify, because now that i know the true sentiment of this song, so can i.

I'm gonna write a book about this. It's gonna be good. It's gonna be called "when God's company calls".

I think this song is simply heart breaking because it's real. You wait too long and suddenly they're gone. Suddenly you want to say something, but you can't. If you ask me it's not just another song, it's, sadly, a true story.
If only people could grasp the greatness of Ben Gibbard's lyrics, especially in this song. It's a heart wrenching piece. Can you imagine, the girl of your dreams getting married to someone else, and yet, still attending the wedding. Company Calls part 1, for me is still as painful to hear, cause it's like he's numbing the pain with alcohol, whereas with the Epilogue, he's now fully intoxicated and CLEARLY expressing his true feelings, Hard to explain, but I feel like I can fully identify.
