In late 1984, the band issued its seminal debut single, "Upside Down," a remarkable blast of live wire feedback anchored by a caveman-like drumbeat; the record made the Mary Chain an overnight sensation in the U.K., as did their nascent live shows, 20-minute sets of confrontational noise (performed with the band's members' backs to the audience) which frequently ended in rioting.

@damnedcarrot Not being funny mate, but you've got to remember this came out in 1984, nothing sounded like this in the chart at the time, they haircuts were not conformist in 1984, neither was the music. Also I doubt they spend their days on you tube picking apart other artists. I mean the drummers the singer of Primal Scream these days mate..

The bass line is the only thing that is actually playing a tune. The only way the singers can stay on pitch is listen to the bass part.  Listening to the screaching sounds in the background is headache inducing.
