Same sound my bike makes but it starts... I would say at this point you should check plugs and fuel...
This is a normal sound for starting this bike (minus the start)

Old video but if you're still wondering... I don't think this is the can of rocks issue. The "can of rocks" sounds more like a baseball card in a kids bicycle wheel if that makes sense. This issue could be anything... if you've figured it out, please post!

I got a virago does the same exact thing got a new solenoid for it still makes the noise but pops right off

man had the same problem with my 81 virago years ago, its a known problem, had my starter rebuilt twice , then sold the bike

haha sounds like my bike. The starter is jumping a cog. You will need to buy a shim kit to fix it. Atleast thats what I heard anyway.
