http://www.otj.com - Behind-the-scenes look at functional and appealing space for Shady Grove Fertility's Annapolis, Maryland location, by healthcare design specialists at OTJ Architects in Washington DC.

Bronze accents harbor notions or maritime style, while reoccurring hues of blue and yellow mimic outdoor colors evoking images of Annapolis city and bay. OTJ's thorough design process integrated multiple design elements for a healthcare facility, ultimately creating a design unique and unlike any other.
-------------
Speaker: Shady Grove Fertility is America's largest and most progressive fertility center. The client moved to Anne Arundel Medical Center's brand new health science pavilion in Annapolis, Maryland.

Movement through the space becomes a large part of the experience. The initial reception desk that includes a purposely-angled entrance designed to entice a guest at the end of a long corridor, leads one immediately down a pathway of curvilinear walkways and vertical surfaces.

Female: Just when you look at the entire day of the fertility center and all the different things that are happening, the traffic patterns vary so much though. We learn how to kind of care towards all different flows of traffic.

Speaker: Using a specific program that focused on the ever-changing traffic patterns, we created a plan that naturally evolved into a fluid design with curving walls and several points of rest, ultimately proving to be both functional and attractive.

The separate waiting areas deliberately disperse patients so that even during the busiest part of the day, the space maintains an open feeling. Soft, natural finishes such as plush carpet and linen-like wall covering offer comfort and calmness.

Female: We're ready at 2:00, AM so that in the morning when they have as many as 50 people sitting there, they aren't completely crowded. They have the opportunity to go to another patient, another waiting room to kind of de-stress themselves.

Speaker: The texture and water-like acrylic panel dividers filter natural light and also ensure privacy. Decorative wall panels also act as visual cues to guide one along and also provide effective space division. A great amount of attention was given to the issue of privacy. These details were intentional decisions made by the designers whose primary concern was to make the space as comfortable as possible for both the patients and the staff.

Female: [Some of the things] are architecturally the wall types for you to make sure that it's sound continuation so you can't hear any kind of sound or conversations passing through the walls.

Speaker: In Healthcare Design, proximity and adjacency planning of patient rooms and nursing workstations should be thoughtfully placed.

OTJ successfully created an inviting and comfortable space building a facility unique to Annapolis and fertility centers overall.
