On the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, little has changed in the global sweatshop economy. Workers are again trapped and burned to death behind locked exit gates.
One hundred years ago, the outrage over the Triangle fire led to the rallying cry, "Who will protect the working girl?" Where is that cry today?

It's important to remember that this shameful era of American history never ended, the corporations merely moved it to other countries. And today the corporatist repuglinut / teahadists are trying to take America back to this shameful past.

yeaper they some would probably make better money and live better. And some wouldn't make it. But your trying to justify two wrongs to make a right. First of all it is wrong for our corporation to enter into such an agreement, and it is wrong for us to buy good that we know were produce in this manor.
You seem to be under the misconception that life is fair. News Flash, It not. A well informed consumer can help things be a little more fair for the poor people that are producing our goods.

But if the alternative is that the women turn to prostitution because they can't get other jobs or the kids resort to selling drugs in order to make ends meat, is the factory really that bad?

Well it would get pretty tough for a while. Till it hit the bottom line of the companies hiring them. Things would change. Would that change be pretty? Not at first no. But when something is Wrong you can't stick you head in the sand and keep supporting that system.

I see, now lets say that was the case and people stopped buying them, what would happen to the people producing the goods?

Ok then Require them to be labeled "Produce with Child Labor and in Sweat shop conditions." So I as consumer can chose weather or not to buy them.

"Banning goods from entering the country that were produce in sweat shops and the use of child labor" Where do you think those people are going to work? There is a reason why people work in those terrible places.

I have never been much on Unions because lets face facts here. Unions get stupid to when there the only game in town. But watching this. That is nothing but over the TOP Corp. GREED, and needs to be stop. No one needs to be force to join a Union. As well as no one should be stop from joining one either. Banning goods from entering the country that were produce in sweat shops and the use of child labor would go along way in fixing this problem. Might even bring Jobs back here.
