Here's Sam playing tug of war with my eldest son Ethan when Sam was just a puppy. Even when he was young Sam was gentle with the children.

  • that was cute, looks like a wonderful dog :). Want to get newfie sooooo bad!!! do they eat alot?

  • They don't eat a huge amount - about the same as a Golden Retriever which is almost half the weight. These guys have a low metabolism, so they don't eat much...and they don't do much either!

  • @tvboy61 When you say they don't do much, are they lazy? How much exercise do they need?

  • @Corvus133 No, they are not lazy. They can be very energetic, especially when they're young. But with their metabolism, Newfoundland dogs tend to limit their running and playing to short spurts. They are not like Retrievers for high energy. We have a young one right now, and when he gets going - watch out! But a half hour later it's zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

  • lol. yeah newfoundlands are HUGE when they're puppies. It's adorable because they don't realize how big they are and when they walk under small tables they sometimes take the tables with them.

  • whos a bum "ME" lol too funny

Sam was like: but i dont fit under there :(

  • That is way too adorable for words.

  • It's an abnormality of the hip found in most large dog breeds. It can be quite painful if left untreated.

  • its a condition where the "socket" part of the hip joint, is malformed and the "ball" fits loosely pinching nerves and destroying cartilage causing a lot of pain to the animal.

  • what deos the hip dysplasia mean?

  • thats a PUPPY O.O

  • kk022: The hip dysplasia can occur at any time. For mine, I noticed a slight limp at about 6 months. Wish I could afford the operation, but that runs about $6 to 8 grand. It's so sad to see how limited they are, not to mention the days when the pain keeps them done. At least my vet gave me pain pills for him. When you get your dog just be sure to show the children how to pet and play. Don't allow kids to be slappy or to crawl over them. You'll love your dog, I promise.
