Philip Hanno, MD, IC expert with the Division of Urology at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, gives an overview of the definition and recommended diagnostic process for interstitial cystitis (IC) per the newly announced, first-ever American Urological Association IC treatment guidelines. Dr. Hanno is chair of the AUA IC Clinical Guidelines Committee. The guidelines are scheduled to be officially released at the end of this year.

  • Create a diagnosis criteria & ensure the criteria is not written in stone. Fair enough, kudos

    It seems that the difference between "complicated" and "uncomplicated" is directly associated with the risk levels of the sum total differential diagnoses.

    1. Was an attempt made to document as many relevant differential diagnoses as possible?

    2. "Pain the patient perceives to be related to the bladder." How strict is that? What about pain perceived to be strictly urethral, with no bladder pain?
