Using electronics and some programming to build tools to use out in the field.
This device could also be incoporated with a camera, most likely any camera that has the remote shutter. With the ultra-sonic ping sensor, you wouldn't have to rely on IR trip sensor.
The first build that I created to trip a camera was super fast, I recorded times at about half of a second trip to snap time.
The Canon CHDK will allow you to upload new abilities to your camera, giving many more possibilities.
Some programs give your camera burst shots, sitting on a servo powered swivel, The camera could be taking a series of 10 quick pictures while being turned from side to side.
Or, if the camera would be too much to move from side to side, then small mirrors could be used attached to a servo to limit the amount of movement. I also believe a prism would also work, but it would be sort of hard because the camera would have to be able to focus through a prism.
I have found that the Arduino along with a few simple things like a camera and some sensors would be smart electronics programmed to do specific jobs out in the field.
And this is what i do.
I inspect the area, and then think of ways to control the area using programmable micro-controllers and sensors.
Problem would be only putting these tools into a package.
Something that I have spoke about with members of the bfro on their message board.
But one problem.
Everything that I said went totally over their heads.
Two years ago I thought of expanding an infrared laser beam, and using that as an illuminator for a nightvision camera. But, Infrared lasers were very high in cost. And today, that's what some companies have built.
Point the expanded laser beam, maybe the size of a 2 foot square, zoom the nightvision camera in on the end of the beam, and you now have an open window on the night.

Nice ideas, I get both of them, the idea of using a laser as an illumination device was scary until i saw you understand to unfocus the beam, makes me which they had a variable focus laser pointer out there premade, it could easily double as your flash light, and if using UV you could inspect for a lot of things, and with IR you're right, it would be bright as day, didn't know nightvision was sensitive to IR I thought it was UV, but we're talking CCD sensors not mammalian eyes.

PRETTY COOL... YOU SHOULD MARKET THIS STUFF AND SELL IT TO OTHER RESEARCHERS LIKE ME TO USE IN THE FIELD?!!!!

@3006USMC I was actually told to do that. But like I said, Building it and fitting it into a nice little housing gets a little rough.
I'm going to have to do it, and figure out a wiring system.
Believe it or not, the sensor can be wireless using a system called XBee, you can see it on youtube in action. Now that! Would be super kick ass!
