"This is an incident that walked into my life - it's a memorial and remembrance of one innocent victim," Reich said.

Mr Pearl was himself a keen musician, and it was his father who asked Reich to write a piece in memory of his son.

Daniel Pearl was killed by kidnappers in Pakistan in 2002
Daniel Variations is based on sung phrases from Mr Pearl's own writing and the Old Testament Book of Daniel - with its doom-laden story of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Iraq.

"I began to realise this dark dream of Nebuchadnezzar is really the world we live where people are killed because of their religion," he said.

Reich is unafraid of the big themes of politics and history. One of his most influential pieces is Different Trains - a haunting work juxtaposing sounds of his childhood train journeys between New York and Los Angeles, alongside those made by Europe's Jews to the gas chambers - it uses the real voices of eye-witnesses.

  • The world would be a better place if we did away with religion entirely.

  • Steve Reich is da man! Great music, period!

  • @TheBlackPage1 100% sure - What the fuck are you talking shit for you gimp.

  • @TheBlackPage1 Religion isn't terrorism, it's just the excuse.

  • this is obvious the sad thing is that most of the dumb fucks on youtube and in the west don;t even realise this and they say stupid shit like "religion=terrorism"

they're so ignorant it makes me sick

  • Bali, Afghanistan, 9/11.. I agree is something awful but It's a pity not to ear a single word from this great musician on palestinians people suffering and dying...

A single word is needed sometimes.

  • I understand what you're saying, it really is just criminal acts in disguise. Still, you can imagine how peoples views are colored after hearing about Daniel Pearl, 9/11 etc. I just feel that religion (as a whole) is at fault. That being said, your comment has given me food for thought. Thanks for the reply.

  • black page, the "true" religions don't force their own views on others. Unfortunately, there exist fanatics who will stop at nothing to spread their dogma. And the saddest part is that people like Daniel Pearl suffer because of these criminals.

Just remember that not ALL Muslims are terrorists. And not ALL Christians fought

    in the Crusades.

  • To expand on that, religion IS terrorism. If there *were* no religions, I am 100% sure that a lot of the problems we're facing today would not exist. Then again, I'm not saying people shouldn't believe in something, just don't force your views on everyone else. I'm a spiritual person, (I don't follow any organized religion) and I'm happy to be that way but I would never force anyone else to believe in the same things that I do.

  • religion?

    or...terrorism?
