Palestinian refugees make new lives in Brazil - 16 May 08

South America is a long way from the Middle East.

While the people of Israel celebrate the birth of their state 60 years ago, Palestinians are mourning their Nakba - when hundreds of thousands were forced into exile, some of them to as far away as Brazil.

David Chater has the story of their long journey.

I think you will no have problems with adaptation because a lot of Arabs descendent live in Sao Paulo. You will see your children making friends quickly just because Brazil is the real Melt Pot and not a mosaic like US.

YEAH LOVE..yeah i know spanish is the rule..but u rarely see like black asian arab culture in its rare..unlike other latin countries like puerto rico dominican republic cuba ..i really dont care for..but i love brazil...cus its like the united states some wat

Rapaz, deixa esse povo lá mesmo. Nem os próprios países árabes querem esse povo, porque o Brasil tem que querer? Esse povo é doido, olha o que estão fazendo em Israel? Receber essa gente é perigoso! Depois vamo ter que dá um jeito ..ai é mais dificil!

I am Brazilian and all I want to say to the refugees from Palestine is "welcome". You are going to find happiness here, I guess. I am proud of my society, its tolerance and love for strangers.

Unfortunately, we have haters too, but they are really few people. Every time they open their dirty mouths, many other Brazilians stand up, and violence against Palestinians here is ZERO.
