Cecile Richards on John McCain
"Hardball with Chris Matthews" 05:17pm
Interview

TRANSCRIPT:
CECILE RICHARDS: I think it was an incredibly telling moment. [] the law of the land under the Supreme Court, as you say. I think it showed a complete lack of regard for womens health, for mothers health, and it really followed on his entire career in Congress. 26 years in Congress, hes voted against womens health 125 times, including very basic issues like affordable birth control, support for family planning, and even when he was asked by a reporter, couldnt say whether or not he supported insurance coverage for birth control, even though he voted against it twice. I think this really was simply in keeping with John McCains record as being very out of touch on womens health issues.

[]

There is a protection for womens health and life, and thats been under the Supreme Court, its been the law of the land for decades now, and thats what I think Senator McCain was questioning. But I think the real point [], the American people, this is a divisive issue, its a very personal, private issue. And what really the American people want to see is a focus on getting to the root of the problem in this country, which is we have the highest unintended pregnancy rate, and teen pregnancy rate in the Westernized industrialized world, theres so much we could do to come together to support affordable family planning, to support information for young people, to support insurance coverage for birth control. Those are the kinds of things that could reduce unintended pregnancy, and the need for abortion. John McCain has opposed every single one of them his entire career [].

  • Pro Life people are so angry. You think being pro life you would enjoy it more.

  • I thought Obama's comments were thoughtful, reflective, and respectful of women. His reasoning showed the care with which he takes his position on a difficult, divisive issue like choice, and I really respect him for it.

McCain, on the other hand, was dismissive, condescending, flippant, and rude.

Women's health is NOT an extreme position.

Consideration of the woman's health is the goddamn LAW in these United States.

It is your position Mr. McCain that is extreme.

  • Cecile Richards is the president of a

place founded by a racist. Take a look

    at planned parenthood racism, eugenics

    on youtube.

  • how did this come up when i looked up fallout 3 nuclear anomaly perk....

  • Well being that most thoes who sit on the "pro-life" side, are pro-war, and cut welfare, education, and funding for afforadable birth control, sex education and prevention. They have no sympahy for rape victims (Palin), and don't really fully understand the issue as a whole. The point is to work to together to reduce the need for abortion, like trying to end violence against women and sex education.

  • You can make abortion illegal,

but people will go back to doing it the illegal way, which is MUCH more harmful to both the mother and baby.

  • how is a pro-life position in opposition to making the world a better place? Promoting a culture in which every life is valued and protected isn't distracting from the bigger issue, it is fighting the very poison which has infected this country: a rampant materialism which holds money and power in highest esteem.

  • How about concentrating on making this a better World to come into? If you pro life people are so worried about a child's rights then please go out and adopt a child and support the less fortunate.

  • Perhaps it's because institutions such as Planned Parenthood abort over a million babies on average every year, and have done so ever since the early 1970s. I'm pro life, and I think it is an outrage that so many innocent lives have been taken in the name of a woman's right to choose. The woman made her choice when she chose to have sex. What about the child's right to have a go at life?

  • And in Poland, Mexico, and China abortion law is entirely different too. What does that have to do with the law of the land in the US?

  • I have met Cecile Richards, and she is a very attractive woman, and straight (her daughter was there.)
