Matt's dad, Fulbright Professor Tom Smith conducts poll favorite Unifour Big Band at Mint Museum Concert, Charlotte NC in 1987, for cable television program. Unifour placed 7th in the 1988 Downbeat Reader's Poll, and was aruably the best known Carolinas jazz ensemble in the 1980s.

  • As one of the trumpets, thanks :) Section was myself, Bill Spencer (RIP), Doug Burns, John Thornton and I can't tell who the fifth person is in this video.

  • The drummer in for the Unifour Jazz Ensemble was in most cases (and is here) Rick Dilling who is no general manager of The Music Center in Lenoir and teaches some adjunct at App State in Boone NC.

  • Very cool. I come here usually looking for drumming and get all this great big band music to look at. This is a super big band drummer here. Anybody know this is?

    These trumpet players are messing around either. Very talented family these Smiths.
