Some environmentalists want a non-petroleum economy. That would be disastrous for our national security.

  • Peak oil is not the same as running out of oil, it's the half way point where demand starts to outstrip supply. The fact that we are getting more of our oil from harder-to-get-to areas like the ocean and tar sands should indicate that we've exhausted the easy-to-get to areas. Gas prices are artificially low right now because of the recession. There's nothing we can do but let the fate of oil play itself out, just be prepared for a future of less abundant energy, not the end of the world.

  • "... just be prepared for a future of less abundant energy."

To hell with that. I'm prepared for a future of nuclear power plants and oil continuing to power the world's needs for at least another 5 decades, and probably longer. Just as with coal, all you scare mongers are preaching it will run out soon. Same old story.

  • So if oil has been key to all the wars, then we should keep buying it so the Arab Muslims don't have it all?

What about money? Isn't money the key to all wars as well?

    Think harder about this one.

  • So about these Muslims and the oil we are paying THEM for: I say the oil is the property of Shell and BP Chevron and the other various companies that built the infrastructure. The various thug natiuons have nationalized it over the years, and never could have erected such magnificent industries on their own.

Venezuela is the most recent offender, and I advocat an American invasion.

  • really funny...some people don't understand the fact that there is a FINITE supply of INEFFICIENT fossil fuels, but an INFINITE supply of solar, wind, and hydro-e power that can meet all of our growing energy needs while creating more jobs & power our military! please, don't rely on youtube for your scientific facts! even worse, the numbskull in this video doesn't see that our military already relies on foreign oil to power it, since US imports >75% of our oil... it will only get worse...

  • I ain't trying to scare anybody, I've looked at trends from the department of energy and have a basic understanding of geology and I have to assume the numbers aren't lying. There is a finite amount and we burn it about a million times faster than the Earth produces it. There will still be enough for the wealthy to use for the next 50 to 60 years and coal has a couple more centuries at current rates, but there are limits to our industrial capacity and I think we are beginning to see them now.

  • America uses 20 million barrels of oil a day.

America produces 6 million barrels of oil a day.

We depend on foreign oil too much. America has humongous oil reserves that need to be used. We need to remove this country's nuts from the Middle East's vice and use our own natural resources. Then political matters in the Middle East would hardly effect the price of oil.

  • @MrCropper The penny hasn't quit dropped yet keep thinking

  • Also, have you heard of geothermal energy? - I think that'd be a great alternative combined with solar energy.

  • I agree with many things you state but also think that you're associating peak oil with running out of oil. Yes, we have PLENTY of oil to last us for hundreds of years, the issue is that the production costs are increasing along with energy input to achieve the same energy output. In other words... we're using more energy each year (specifically past the last few) WITHOUT increasing energy output.

  • weeee

yeah, screw these other commie nations and sabotage Copenhagen! Show them we are not afraid of death and rather die than let someone in Washington tell us what cars to drive. Bring down those forests and mast cattle on these grounds so we can have burgers and methane and get fat and cause costs. No, I'd rather fucking die than to leave the morbidly obese weight range.

Screw everybody, if I cannot get laid: good, everybody has to die!

  • "Oil is the only energy resource potent enough to run our civilization".

This is untrue. Remember that energy derives from any physical motion. Our technological advancement is such that we are capable of harnessing solar, wind, wave and geothermal energy that can power the entire planet for long periods of time.

There are many theories as to why these alternate resources aren't being exploited. Some say special interest oil monopolies obstruct their production for market share.
