do the two strands of yarn intertwine as you switch them?
I mean, does the yellow go over the magenta as you go along or does the unused colour hang loosely in the back?

the yarns are crossed in the back. The color you're working with ends up being crossed over the non-working color in the back on the right side (knit) rows. On the wrong side (purl) rows, the colors get crossed over the front so you don't have a million floats.

Isn't this done in the round? Meaning there is not a purl side - the yarn is carried along the back.
