I'm not american, but its very "Kerouac" if you know what I mean. Boxcars are what yanks call freight trains, the hobos or tramps would ride on them for free to wherever they were going. The railways would have guards to try and stop the hobos hitching a lift - "gentlemen don't get caught" - anyway thats my interpretation (for what its worth) - and its early REM, so pretty enigmatic......
