If you're a writer, you'll know it when something pops into your mind and gives you goose bumps--follow it, because that's your new girlfriend. Treat that idea well, nurture it, care for it(you can even abuse it if you want)and it'll reward you beyond your wildest imaginings, because it loves you. Oh, by the way, it will NOT tolerate interlopers or "competition" for its affections. It's intensely jealous, just like any lover.

That was pretty cool, although after just reading a couple of Kafka's short stories, I'm not sure the last one always applies.

in a noval that's fine but a short story you don't have time pull the reader along, it's a different animal

Well, I've always thought a combined micro/macroeconomics class should be mandatory in highschool. The school system is to blame as it's outdated. It's slow, boring, and inefficient which is why I believe a lot of students lose interest. There needs to be semesters, competition, and teachers need to be taught how to teach properly.
