@henrikarvidsson Nationsalisms apart, we know today both crews made mistakes, but the biggest blunder by far was made by the Stockholm,'s Third Mate who misread the radar and made the ship steer starboard when the Andrea Doria had already begun an evasive run on her port side. He confounded right with left on the radar. Hung on the walls of Kings Point Academy, where the collision has been analysed and is a teaching subject, you find the portrait of the Andrea' Doria's captain, Piero Calamai.

@henrikarvidsson Putting nationalisms aside, now it is accepted that both crews made mistakes, but also that the biggest blunder by far was made by the Stockholm, whose Third Mate disastrously misread the radar signals and made the ship steer starboard when the Andrea Doria had already begun an evasive run on her port side. Hung on the walls of Kings Point Academy, where the collision is subject of teaching, you find the portrait of the Andrea Doria's captain, Piero Calamai.

My Great Grand Parents were on it and my Mother was supposed to be. Thank god she didn't go. She was only 3.

The Doria was one of the most beautiful ships to sink. She and her twin sister the Cristoforo Colombo were the finest looking liners on the Italy-New York service.

could she not have been saved

@starsora1 No Wilhelm Gustloff is the worst.

Almost forgot:
It's maritime, (not 'maratime').
