Noordam vs. Westerdam horn battle

We were departing aruba on the Noordam heading back to Ft. Lauderdale and once we were parallel with the Westerdam's bridge, we began the horn battle and I think we won!

@Jerrycobra yeah the two sisters were equipped w/ the same horn except the Westerdam is older so their horn doesn't have that same solid sound anymore like the Noordam.

Very nice, looking out to see the Westerdam coming home this summer. She will do a series of cruises from here home port and Holland America Line founding city (1873) Rotterdam The Netherlands. It's 5 years since she was home. In 2004 in here maiden season at here first arrival to the port I visit here she's a beauty. When she departed on one moment here horn stuck and keep blowing fore 15 minutes.

Many think that ships have horn battles, when actually they are greetings/goodbyes and are customary especially among sister ships in a cruise line or even outside of their company. The number and duration of the blast have significance and can even be used to signal distress or warnings (old days). Now of course radios and navigation aids can take the place of horns.

@xmtryanx yea, i know carnival's spirit/vista class is all mixed up and stuff, for what i know, HA is vista class, so is noordam a hybrid vista/spirit?

@Jerrycobra They may not have been... the design of sister ships can be tweaked during construction. Take Noordam, for instance: she's 50 feet shorter than all her sisters.

They also sound different because one of the ships is using only the mast horn, and the other is using both the mast and funnel horns.
