I went Steelhead fishing in Lake Erie and caught a nice 7lb., 30in. steelhead off Elk Creek about a mile from the lake. After we were done fishing, my dad took us up the road to show us where they come in off the lake. The creek flows right into lake Erie on the beach and the steelhead trout literally hop up from the lake into the creek on the beach in about three inches of water. (about a ten yard distance.) Once they reach the creek I filmed, it is about a foot deep and they swim down it all through Erie's tributaries and lay eggs. Where I filmed, we're not allowed to fish because the fish commision collects the eggs laid from the steelhead and hatches them. (That's why I wasn't fishing.) When my dad went up a few weeks prior to this, you could actually walk across the water on the backs of the fish there were so many. Every trout you saw was over 20 inches, many pushing 30. I thought it was pretty cool.

  • oh preety cool i plan on going fishing there this weekend whats it like? i live in hamilton so i was gunna head up to 20 mile creek but it looks like its worth to try there

  • 20 mile is a good spot too. I fished Elk Creek under a railroad tressle and the water was really low, so the trout were spooked easily. We caught all of our fish in places where the water was murky and they couldn't see us. I recommend trying near the Walnut Creek boat access, they were hammering the steelhead there cause it's deep and murky. Its really late in the season though, they aren't running that much anymore so the next two weeks will probably be the end of the season. Good Luck!
