This practice is common in the Himalayan regions where due to scarcity of arable land, by this practice of sharing a wife between two brothers, the family holdings are not split up between brothers. Its quite different to other parts of Bhutan where land and households were traditionally inherited by women, and men would marry into a family. In the highlands, women marry into the husbands family.
