Hired a car for 2 days. This is day 1 when we went up north as far as Karioi. Most of the action shows class 30 electrics in and around Waiouru. It includes 201 Overlander at 4 locations from Waiouru to Longburn.

1. 237 Auckland to Wellington freight. Class 30 electrics 30203 & 30042. 7:35 am. Porewa, just north of Marton. Set up time for this was almost zero alas.
2. 221 Auckland to Wellington freight. Class 30 electrics 30111 & 30094. 9:25 am. Hihitahi, just south of Waiouru.
3. 230 Wellington to Auckland freight. Class 30 electrics 30140 & 30013. 10:30 am. Waiouru south.
4. 200 Wellington to Auckland passenger train (Overlander). Class 30 electric 30249. 12:10 pm. Waiouru station.
5. 251 Karioi to Wellington timber products train. DFT7241 & DX5114. 13:15 pm. Waiouru station.
6. 232 Wellington to Auckland freight. Class 30 electrics 30192 & 30071. 13:45 pm. Waiouru south.
7a. 201 Auckland to Wellington passenger train (Overlander). Class 30 electric 30163. 14:15 pm. Waiouru south.
7b. (Overlander). 30163. 15:15 pm. Mangaweka.
7c. (Overlander). 30163. 16:20 pm. Feilding (Lethbridge St.).
7d. (Overlander). DFT7226. 17:00 pm. Longburn (Reserve Road). Loco change at Palmerston North.

Warm sunny virtually windless day but still with a good covering of snow on the central North Island volcanic peaks.

  • Yes that's something easily fixed using MovieMaker. On YouTube it's best to have the videos as concise as possible so that folk don't have to waste download Gb. Cutting them when the last wagon has passed the camcorder is a good idea.

Given the equipment I use however my biggest quality issues are jerky panning and angling. If I had megabucks to spare on an HD camcorder I could just set it up and let it run. However with my Canon MV700i I need to pan for non-blurry loco identification.

  • Can't answer that. However, compared with the Railtrack data for 24/11, 200 northbound was certainly rostered to have A2234 in its consist but was also one AO car short. 201 southbound was rostered for what we saw - 3 Overlander cars + the AG. AFAIK A2234 is a charter car so it will have been specifically booked by a group.

  • Generally, good footage. Little bit too much roll-by of freight cars disappearing into distance. 7 out of 10.

  • What day was this? Any reason A 2234 was in shot 4 (yellow stripe small window car) and the southbound was only 3 cars long?
