Yes, they are quite common in Arizona - usually during the monsoon season, but they've happened other times of the year.
I visited relatives in Lake Montezuma in August 1992. Drove to Sedona one day and saw a storm cloud over the mountain overlooking the town. Tried to race the storm back to Lake Montezuma, but it overtook me as I got off the highway. Rain, lightning and hail forced me off the road for several minutes. Next day there were still hailstones by the side of the road.
