I studied this piece years ago and am refreshing it by listening to performances by past and present great pianists. So far, I think Lipatti does it best. The performance
is brilliant, technically thrilling, never overdone, always elegant. I like his tempo--
others take it so fast it is frenzied with a loss of the musical ideas. I think Lipatti
is my "go to guy" for Chopin, that's for sure.

You forget that this is a piano... it sounds like pure music from the heavens

He had leukemia.
He in fact made many recordings while sick. The recording company came to his house whenever he felt well enough. But you'll never be able to hear that on his recordings :D

imagine had he lived twice his age. i think some coleague of him poisoned him for fear of what he might achieve if he lived longer. i don't blame him either

Thanks for this. I'm biased as we had Lipatti's Valses on record when I was young, but even now I hear what he does as a model of balance of beauty, elegance, strength, finesse...... Something to return to again & again.
A real listening pleasure. Thanks for posting
