Gov. Schwarzenegger Joins in Chanukah Celebration at Capital

http://www.apple770.com Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today joined Jewish community leaders and Chabad of California to observe the 14th annual Chanukah celebration at the State Capitol. This year's ceremony paid special tribute to the heroic firefighters and emergency personnel who fought the recent wildfires in Southern California and the troops serving our country overseas by dedicating the lighting of the Capitol Menorah to their honor.

"Lighting the menorah is a powerful symbol for us all. It is a bright light against the darkness of hatred, intolerance and bigotry," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "I am pleased this year's ceremony will honor our troops and California's firefighters. We are so grateful for these heroes that risk their lives to keep the rest of us safe."

Led by West Coast Chabad Director Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, the 14th annual Chanukah celebration at the State Capitol was the first ceremony to be broadcast live on cable television around the nation. The event featured musical performances by the California National Guard's 59th Army Band and Israel's Jerusalem Children's Choir.

The Capitol Menorah, made locally in Sacramento, is made of steel, weighs one-half ton and stands 13 feet high by nine feet across. In 2006, the Capitol Menorah was painted by children with special needs in Chabad's Friendship Circle program.
