"One man's ending is another man's beginning" Everything is good for you (if it doesnt kill) you, by Crowded House. The song best describes the motif, to me in the lyric it shows that it is life, the emotion of song may not have been written about this one piece but then again Brett (if he were alive today) would pin it down to a Bob Dylan lyric, maybe.
Here I am outside Brett Whiteley's final studio in Surry Hills, Nsw Australia. For fans of Brett and the ones still learning here is your first YOUTUBE video about the great man!
The studio is now open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. The NEW studio book is also available at the gift shop! The studio opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. 2 Raper Street is a small lane so it is advised to travel by public transport as a car space may be a bit hard to find. Fans of Brett Whiteley should watch the films "Monkey Grip" Starring Noni Hazelhurst and "Travelling North" staring the late Leo McKern and Graeham Kennedy. Brett's art makes an appearence and well its Australiana at its best! Gallery is free of charge as it is supported by JP Morgan! Heck, if only they bought my art! Enjoy the studio for yourself this weekend! Afterwards go for a coffee at one of the great Surry Hills cafes and make an afternoon of it, in style!
Also check out my part two of this video blog. This is my most popular of my channel, second comes my Dani Sith Kirosawa think piece that comes a close second!
*This is my own original and personal tribute. Do not accept imitations. In respect and honour to The Whiteley Estate I say only this people, videos on Brett Whiteley are available through the AGNSW either through the shop or its website.** Those wanting to make their own tributes are more than welcome. Appropriation is fine, outright second rate copies are not good enough and do absolutley nothing to the greatness of B.W's art and life.
In Brett Whiteley's notes he describes this motif and idea of his as "The meaning of life". There are preliminary sketches of the two matchsticks and notes on lighting and display logistics.
CLEARLY - with the match stick set Brett was highlighting the way in which modern consumerism burns away at people with red hair's soul. bullying them into believing that they are actually lesser of a people, thus forcing them to die their hair black. this is evidently shown in the blackness of the 'burnt' match stick - its once brown luscious hard tall-standing wood, now burnt black and shriveled up in the piercing cold of sydney. red nuts worldwide loved brett . too bad for the word limit.

What a wonderful sinsight you have given us! Brett did clearly display his red haired characteristics in many of his works. For an object I never saw the meaning of you probly just cracked the Whiteley Code here! In what was a "before and after" motif you made the obvious realistically evident! Great detective work! It is a shame we cant be reading what Brett thought in a YouTube channel of his own. That is the tragedy.

He died too young and there is nothing cool about that as we are all still asking "why?". Those who glamourise death are the grim reapers of society. Brett was it's victim. He could have lived.

But this way has the sign. I thought it was the perfect way to get people to go. From Crown Street you can get a drink or somthing to eat then go to the gallery. If you know a better way then film it in a video response maybe.
