Since you seem to be interested in Trung Lap, this was the Hairiest Assignment of my Army career. Although the VC in that area were relatively tame, I had to carry a load of rats to a doctor of that division once a week. Of course there are those who wonder why! The rats were combed for fleas, to keep an eye on a possible outbreak of Bubonic Plague. Because the dirt road was ALWAYS mined, I drank at least a sixpack of beer before starting, so that would not feel any pain if a mine exploded.
As Intelligence Operations Officer in our US 4th Armored Division in Goeppingen, Germany, a CIA agent asked me to serve as a spy in East Germany. At the time, my boss was Colonel Aantero Aakkula, who was against that option: He had served in the Finnish Army during World War II, hiding weapons in various part of Finland, which were later turned against the Soviet invaders. After my tour as Advisory Team Leader in Vietnam, first north of Kontum, and then in Trung Lap, I trained soldiers.
I was born in Breslau on November 4, 1942, and my family lived in Kospoth-Strasse 9. My mother, grandmother, and I escaped the doomed city, which was now surrounded by the Soviet Army, just in time to be hunted by American and British fighter pilots, so the locomotive fuehrer decided to shut down his boilers in the midst of an enormous forest. Within a few hours, we arrived in Dresden, just in time to witness the destruction of that city. Much later, I served as an officer in our US Army.
