Truth Or Dare One-Shot Part 4

[At lunch]

Joe's POV
I had to see her, talk to her. She had to know that I wasn't a jerk and that I wanted to be with her. I was done taking her for a test-ride. I had fooled around with her in the beginning just to have another girl, but then I got attached to her. I don't know what it was, but she was different. She had standards and plans. She wore her heart on her sleeve. I liked that. I liked her. I was so dumb.

No one's POV
Emily walked into the cafeteria with Nick five minutes after the bell had rang. She put her bag down and went to get in the lunch line. Joe watched her go. He wanted to go after her, but after what had happened that morning, he thought it best to give her space.

"Hey gorgeous!" a voice behind him said.

He turned to see who was standing behind him. It was Taylor.

"Hi Taylor," he said looking back towards Emily in the line.

Taylor sat down next to him, "So there's a party this weekend at my house. I want you to come."

"I think I'm going somewhere this weekend," Joe said. "Sorry."

"Then make it up to me this Friday night," Taylor said playing with his hair.

He moved away from her, "Go away please. I don't want to deal with you right now."

Taylor sat up, offended. Joe turned away from her and she stalked off. He looked back towards the line. Emily was gone and sitting back at her table with Nick, Miley, Mitchel, and Meaghan. Joe kept staring at them. Emily was smiling and laughing. She seemed alright. She seemed happy. This made Joe sick. He didn't want her to have to put on a mask so as not to show her hurt.

Then she lifted her eyes and looked right at him. He stared at her for a few seconds then motioned for her to meet him outside. He got up and headed to the courtyard. A few minutes after he got there, Emily joined him.

"Emily, I-" Joe started but she cut him off.

"Joe, stop this. I know Nick scared you. You don't have to do this," Emily said. She turned to go.

"Emily! You stop! Stop acting like everything's fine! I know it's not! Nick didn't scare me, he opened my eyes," Joe took a few steps closer to her. "I've been playing with your emotions, but believe me, it was unconsciously done. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt you. I have the unfortunate reputation of being a heartbreaker and I didn't want that to happen to you. What happened at the party was my way of letting you go. I chose you to kiss because I like you. I thought that if I told you that it didn't mean anything then only my heart would be broken. I didn't realize you would take it so personally and I'm very truly sorry."

She just looked at him for a moment. She couldn't believe what he had just said. Was he playing with her? No, he couldn't be.

"Emily, please, say something," Joe pleaded.

She just closed her eyes and shook her head. When she opened her eyes, Joe was looking down.

"Joe, you have no idea how much I wanted to hear you say that," Emily finally said.

"But?" Joe asked.

"There's no but," Emily said smiling. "I like you a lot."

Joe stepped forward and hugged her tightly, "Thank you so much."

"Just promise me one thing," Emily said.

"Anything," Joe replied.

"No more truth or dare games," she laughed.

"You got it," he said.
