@krazyzark You bring up very strong points. I guess I always try to not think of it as a "gimmick", but rather try to enjoy the product and live within the imaginary characters' world. I actually spent months away from the dirtsheets, and actually enjoyed wrestling a lot more. To your point, I can see where fans grew tired of it. I was more appalled due to the nature of his gimmick and beating on a mentally handicap. I mean, what if a "Gay" character was beaten silly for "acting" gay?
@WastedWilly fans turned on Eugene because it was a lame, dead end gimmick. Sure the guy actually had a fair amount of talent, but the character was the equivalent of Zack Gowen PRETENDING he only had one leg. Imagine Mick Foley wrestling as a dry cleaner. Sure the talent would get him so far, but eventually the fans would just grow tired of the gimmick.
i think that the music should have done that record coming to a scratching halt sound and ended with the price is right losing horn when Vince's picture comes up
And so was the Mexicools, Nation of Domination, and so many other gimmicks that have come through the WWE/F product. The bottom line is, they are actors. Nick Dinsmore played the part of an 'underdog' and a 'specially challenged' competitor. If you know you have a 'character' like that, what you do has to be delicately decided...and beating on a 'specially challenged' wrestler is FAR more offensive than actually portraying one on TV.
Eugene's gimmick was offensive to millions of people who either had special difficulties or coped with loved ones with such a trait on a daily basis. Frankly, you'd have to BE retarded to think Eugene was good
The Sandman beating on Eugene. I can't believe WWE got away with that without so much as a damn protest. That was the first time I was ever really appaulled at WWE's product. I always liked the Eugene character, and never understood why fans turned on him. When Sandman beat on Eugene and fans cheered it - I switched the channel and didn't watch the program for months.
