Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombat" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.
The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.
Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter.

This MK does look very cool. They got the green light too. After the studios saw Legacy they just went ahead and said make this movie. So this movie we should see in a couple years and it's said to go the way of this short film. The 1st live action MK movie is one of those guilty pleasures like you know this is bad but you have fun with this movie. This MK style just looks freakin badass and could be not only a fun movie but actually a good one.

@BlacktopsList meh, you lack the credibility to criticize my post. i said nothing of budget and/or special FX. All game-film adaptations have to have some kind of realistic plot to hold the film together, its like if Xmen still had the blue/yellow lycra costumes it would just look stupid and tacky. i love the original plot but its a kids movie id like to see rebirth be an R18 violent/morbid film rather than some PG-13 b-grade movie like its predecessors.

@BlacktopsList your a moron, the original films were tacky and cheesy, this adds a more realistic morbid feel to the series and far surpasses the original plot.
