Released tapes reveal Nixon's Vietnam fears - 3 Dec 08

Newly released tapes of Richard Nixon, the former US president, reveal how much he struggled to deal with public anger over the Vietnam war.

But the tapes also show his defiance and determination to win the conflict by bombing North Vietnam, despite opposition from his advisers.

Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports.

Nixon was faced with tremendous obstacles that no president faced in the 20th century.The United States was on the verge of a civil war because of this war. The Chritmas bombing was a success and brought the communist back to the peace table. 2.5 million Indochinese died over 20 years of the Vietnam War, the vast majority at the hands of the Communists despite the vast difference in firepower between them and the Americans. It took less than a decade after US defeat for them to slaughter 5 million Indochinese. Emboldened by US defeat, the Russians launched a geo-political offensive throughout the Third World, culminating in their slaughter of 2 million Afghans. The hippies are not ashamed. They blame America.

yeah, that was nice, wasnt it? It was 30 years ago. What is happening today? The vietnamese government officials are all enriching themselves by selling the most strategic land in vietnam to china. All those people that died keeping the chinese out, today they will give it away for a price. In 30 years, vietnam will be a part of china. And the vietnamese people will probably be a lot better off.
