While most believe TV was not seen in Australia until it's launch in 1956.. in fact it was demonstrated on many occasions starting in 1928 in Melbourne.

1934.. marked a series of broadcast demonstrations in 30 line and later 180 line definition across Brisbane that lasted until 1939.

After the Second World War .. the Labour Government was pressured to launch Television and put forward a model similar to Britain for its introduction with a Government run station to dominate. This was never actioned as the Chifley Government was turfed from office in 1949 with the imcoming Menzies Government opting for a shared Government and Commercial platform.

A recession in the early 1950s stalled TV's introduction to Australia before it's ultimate launch coinciding with the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956.

Before all this though there were widespread demonstrations across Australia both in the capital cities and regional areas.

In 1948 .. it was demonstrated as part of Sydney's Royal Easter Show as PYE brought British 405 Line Camera's and Receivers to Australia for use and viewing at a pavillion at the showgrounds.

In 1978.. the Australian made Movie "Newsfront" dramatised some of these 405 line demonstrations including the 1948 demos with this segment. Some of the original vision from 1948 was used including the comedy team of "Ada and Elsie".

When TV was launched in 1956 ..the Government was able to select a newer Higher Definition standard CCIR 625 line resolution.

In late 1974.. that 625 resolution was transitioned to 625 line PAL colour for demonstration broadcasts before it's official launch on 1 March 1975 across Australia.

The next upgrade in standard and definition came with the introduction of digital television in Australia in January 2000.
