PreOp® Patient Education: Hernia Repair Inguinal Surgery 1

On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown.
You may receive a sedative by mouth and an intravenous line may be put in.
You will then be transferred to the operating table.

In the operating room, a nurse will begin preparation by clipping or shaving your groin.

The surgeon will then apply antiseptic solution to the skin over the hernia, place a sterile drape around the operative site and
will inject a local anesthetic. Usually, the surgeon will inject more than one spot - to make sure that the entire area is thoroughly numb.
Or in the case of a spinal, the anesthetic will be injected into the small of your back. After allowing a few minutes for the anesthetic to take effect,
Patient Education
After allowing a few minutes for the anesthetic to take effect, the surgeon will make a shallow incision 3-5 inches in length, directly over the hernia.
The next incision dissects through the inguinal canal itself and reveals the hernia sack, which is simply the peritoneum that lines the inside of the abdomen.
The surgeon gently pushes the contents of the sack back into the abdomen.
Next, the opening at the neck of the peritoneum is tied and the hernia sac is removed.
The inguinal canal itself is closed with sutures. These dissolve over time and do not need to be removed. Any defect or weakness in the muscle tissue needs to be repaired in order to reduce the risk of reoccurrence.
Occasionally, the surgeon will use a mesh patch to help reinforce this area
Then the muscle layers and other tissues are sewn together and the skin is closed with sutures or staples.
Finally, a sterile dressing is applied.

@Lrdvltr OH SHIT! O_o I'm actually almost afraid to ask you how the surgery turned out (being that you typed this 1 year ago)! If my surgeon was watching this vid while performing the surgery, I'd have gotten up and ran...... and that'd be long, LONG before he/she'd get his/her hands on any surgical instrument!

@MeMartini1 i wouldnt put it so lightly, surgery is the easy part. I had open surgery 5 days ago, im walking fine but there is still pain, i think the worst part is standing after sitting or lying down, for the guys just make sure you pull your balls from between your legs when you stand up or it huuuuuuuurts lol you will know what i mean...

i seem to have the same problem as many of you have said after surgery i have a painful mass that goes down to my testicle. it is more painful than the rest of my operation area.

Mine yesterday by laparoscopy (keyhole) at the main hospital in Guildford in England. No charge, thanks to our National Health Service.

Scary experience but only because I'd never had surgery. All the staff there were perfect, full of concern and good humour. In at 8am out at 3pm. Very little pain despite several holes drilled in abdomen, already stopped taking painkillers. Trying to remember to take it easy (daren't tell Other Half all this cos she's looking after me mmmm)
