Over the years of helping first time home buyers with the home mortgage I've answered TONS of the questions about how much a buyer should spend on their first home. I will say this much, if a first time home buyer spends up to the max that his mortgage lender (that's me) COULD approve them for, they will be broke most of their life. Yes, I said it. You should NEVER, EVER spend what you CAN qualify for. Take that number and multiply by 60% in my opinion.

@realtechguy - Quite a compliment coming from Mr. Tech Savvy himself! LOL. It's a Kodak Zi-8 - Smoking hot HD, even though that video is in 720! At any rate, thanks for the encouragement. Pretty sure the Zi-8 was a @techsavvyagent recommendation.

Thanks Chris for showing us that it's smart to start with a home you can afford.

@Sclohovideo Glad you liked it, sir! Had some feedback that maybe I shouldn't have shown my humble beginnings, since they were SO humble. :-)
