1/2 Taken from the double DVD "A practical guide to creative writing" this is an opening ten minute clip from the introduction and analysis of a story. The whole of the compilation covers the teaching and practical classroom techniques of producing imaginative and complete stories within the Primary age ranges.
The rest of the DVD covers character, setting, plot development and using everyday objects to produce a three-part story with a definite beginning, middle and end.

  • Thank you so much for these kind words.

  • Out of all of the comments yours was the most direct, concise and flattering and I am gracious enough to accept your thanks. To be honest I am so pleased that it can be of some assistance. With lots of people it's the not knowing what a story consists of and how to put it all together that holds them back. This is just a recipe and what you make with it is up to you.

    Thanks again

  • This video demonstrates the basic techniques of creative writing with great clarity. I cannot thank you enough for emphasizing the characteristics of the voice rather than the mundane, "said, said, said." Your use of adjectives for descriptions of scenery is remarkably vivid; I could "see" what was taking place, as if I were there experiencing it myself.

I had been putting off revising my novel. Now I know why ... I was waiting for inspirational instruction. Thank you for sharing :)

  • @12thDecember

That is so kind of you to say such great things about the video.

From your site I see that you are a transcript editor. Use the experience to your own advantage, as you will know, people talk in broken sentences and that can give a 'reality' to any dialogue, that II find is sometimes missing in novels.

    Good Luck

    Tony

  • Another good tip, thanks, Tony. You're right, that's how people talk, and also they interrupt and speak over one another, et cetera, cetera. I'll incorporate that in my diaogue revisions.

I hope you'll be inspired to create and post more creative writing videos :)

  • Once again thank you very much, it does make it all worthwhile that what I do is seen of some use. There are several other DVDs about writing, plotting, character and setting on the interwonderweb. I used to record people telling me about their lives and that was where I heard how people 'really' speak and not a series of perfect, in order words. All the very best. Another tip is from Lauries Lee, he said that all writing should be tested by saying out loud.

  • I felt like in school again. That was really long time ago, so you can understand my enrapture while listening. Absolute simplicity. I've forgotten these things, but now it is coming like a help from nowhere, in my work. Sincerely Thank you, sir. :)

  • the style of the narration is indeed very important

  • Out of all the books I've read or stuff I've found on youtube, this is the best explained and simplest approach I've ever heard to assembling a story, thankyou Tony!

  • thank you for this. i'll take the advice to heart.

  • The most creative answers are hidden in just six questions - Who, What, Why, Where, When and How.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • @ storyjoin Checked out your site STORYJOIN and loved it.

  • I'm not much of a story writer but do enjoy to read. I had an idea to write a story but couldn't finish it, so I started a webstie called STORYJOIN It allows you to create stories with other members. You start a story and others finish it for you, it's fun to see how the story ends.
